This course is designed to help researchers develop the necessary skills and language to support their development as international academics.
By the end of the course participants will have a better understanding of the requirements within a UK/US publishing environment for:
Researching and writing academic proposals
Drafting and editing the following sections for publication
Collaborating with international colleagues
Participants will complete and receive constructive feedback from their tutor on the following tasks:
A proposal for a journal article or conference presentation
An excerpt of a literature review
A summary of methodology
A description of research findings
A summary of discussion and conclusion
A poster presentation of recent research
During the two weeks participants are expected to commit to approximately 20 hours of independent study outside the core timetable of contact time. Independent study will include
Reading
Keeping vocabulary records
writing a section of a literature review
Writing an abstract and personal statement
Producing an academic poster
Preparing to present an academic poster
There will be a mixture of lectures, workshops, and independent study. In each session participants will practise and collaborate with peers. The teaching methodology used gives participants opportunities to learn through connected and purposeful communicative language activities.
